Sam Bookman

climate law Scholar & Practitioner

What do we owe to one another in an era of pervasive environmental crises, such as climate change? My research examines this question through environmental and constitutional law.

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard’s Project on the Foundations of Private Law and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Pace Law School. I have previously held teaching or research appointments at NYU, Boston College, and the University of Melbourne. I received my SJD from Harvard Law School in 2025.

My research explores issues related to constitutional design, climate litigation, and social movements, as well as environmental human and nonhuman rights. My work is published or forthcoming in Environmental Law, the Utah Law Review, the German Law Journal, and the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies. Most of my work can be found on my SSRN page, or by contacting me!

I am an expert on climate law and litigation. I have taught climate law at several law schools, and have acted for a range of international clients, including several United Nations officers and agencies. As Senior Staff Attorney at the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, I regularly advise and represent clients before courts and tribunals, and manage complex multijurisdictional legal research. I have also consulted on several projects related to constitutional drafting and design. I am qualified to practice in New York State, and have been admitted to the bar in New Zealand (currently non-practicing).

Outside of research and work, I enjoy trivia, hiking, and watching cricket. Please reach out if you’d like to discuss my research or practice!
